But that truth no longer holds. Today, we find ourselves in an era where what you see can no longer be trusted. The camera lies now, and it lies convincingly.
I recently watched the accompanying video and it struck a nerve. It showcased a series of scenes, AI-generated news reports, fake people, and fabricated scam videos. At first glance, every clip looked real. The voices sounded natural, the expressions were spot-on, and the messaging felt authentic. But every frame was fake. These weren’t deepfakes created for entertainment or satire, they were designed to deceive. The scary bit, they’re getting better, faster, and more convincing by the day.
We’re witnessing the rise of a new type of scam. One where fraudsters don’t just send dodgy emails or spoof a phone number, they show up on screen. They look like a family member, your colleague, your friend. They speak clearly, confidently, and with urgency. But they’re not real. The technology behind these videos has evolved to the point where the average person, and even seasoned professionals, can’t spot the difference. This is where the danger lies.
For small and medium-sized businesses, this represents a significant threat. Trust, the backbone of any team or organisation, is now a vulnerability. If a staff member receives a video from a familiar face asking for a financial transfer or confidential data, will they pause to question it? Or will they act on instinct, convinced by what they see and hear?
This kind of manipulation isn’t limited to businesses or global teams. AI-generated fake videos are also being used to exploit individuals in more personal ways. So, what can we do in response? The most important step is awareness. We must begin to treat video content, especially in unexpected or high-stakes situations, with a healthy dose of scepticism. Verification should become second nature. If something doesn’t feel right, even if it looks right, it’s worth a second check. A call. A confirmation. A pause.
Building a culture of cyber vigilance is no longer optional, it’s essential. It’s not just about installing the latest software or training staff once a year. It’s about embedding doubt in the right places, encouraging people to think twice, and creating processes that support verification over assumption.
As someone who once believed that the camera was the ultimate witness, it’s unsettling to confront this new reality. But it’s also an opportunity. An opportunity to rethink how we protect ourselves and our organisations in a digital world where appearances can be manufactured in seconds.
In this new era, critical thinking has become the sharpest lens we have.
